CHAPTER SEVEN

MONTHLY THE WAY WE WERE NIGHT AT EMMA’S

‘Lovely isn’t everything, Hubble,’ Keely hollered at the television. ‘You should be with the one who makes you realise you are more than you think you are.’

IT HAD been more difficult than Harry had imagined it would be. Sharing a roof. Sharing a bathroom. Sharing milk over breakfast. Sharing a newspaper, splitting it between them, he taking the sports pages, Emma taking the fashion pages, neither of them opting for the always depressing general news section.

He had done it before but there had always been a buffer, a chaperon, with Jamie or her parents on the scene. Suddenly, with just the two of them, it felt domestic. He would have expected the routine, the peace and quiet in which she lived, to feel claustrophobic, but it felt…nice. Reassuring. Desirable.

Then she had thrown out that saucy little smile the night before, right when everything had felt extra normal, after snuggling in front of the TV watching a romantic film that even Harry thought was pretty great.

Then, all of a sudden, she had stood and fixed his collar, her small fingers unwittingly running along the back of his neck. Since he had been barefoot and she had been wearing high-heeled boots, they had been almost face to face. He had caught a whiff of her perfume, which throughout the day had fused with the peachy smell of her hair and that other scent that was purely her, a pretty, youthful mix of sea air and soap.

Then she had given him that smile. Little Emma was meant to play with Barbies and sit by the pond near her parents’ home sketching the ducks. She wasn’t meant to know just how to flash a smile that had a guy’s guts twisting in response. He’d slept even less than usual that night, his usual suffocating nightmares a mere backdrop to the memory of her knowing smile.

Now, the next day, on the upper floor of the WWW Designs’ lease, they were together again, but thankfully not alone. His team had all happily come up from all around Victoria to help clean out the junk room to make it their new consolidated office space.

The atmosphere was electric. Expectations were high and his little Emma was running the show, making his staff laugh, making sure they were all happy, and comfortable, and included.

He stood back and watched as she chatted with a couple of the guys in his sales team. She wore faded pink sweat-pants that clung lovingly to her small frame, new white sneakers that she was happily scuffing in the dusty room and a fresh white T-shirt. Her hair was pulled back into a stubby ponytail. Her face was scrubbed free of make-up, her cheeks glowed pink from the heat of the uncooled room. At that moment, lacking in all efforts at sophistication, Harry really saw the differences in her for the first time.

There was more to her than new clothes and a new haircut. Her cheeks were thinner, showcasing elegant cheekbones that needed no highlights.
